Gate Valves

A Gate valve works by blocking fluid out of a particular area until the flow of liquids is wanted. Gate valves are used in the petroleum industry thanks to their ability to cut through liquids. There are two different kinds of gate valves, parallel and wedge-shaped. Parallel gate valves use a flat gate between two parallel seats. A wedge shaped gate valve is slightly different incorporating inclined seats. There are also metal seated and resilient seated gate valves.

A Gate valve has either have a rising stem, which allow you to see whether or not the valve is on or off, or they have non-rising stems which do not allow you to see whether they are on or off. However, gate valves are susceptible to corrosion, which can prevent them from working properly and open and closing properly. If the stems get heavily corroded, then the stem can break off which would make the valve useless. By opening and closing slowly, there should be no fluid hammer, but the valve should only be used in the fully open or closed positions or the valve can become damaged.
