Diamond has always been thought of the hardest material known to man, however, modern science has created an even harder material when exposed to high temperatures, it is known as CBN. CBN, named after its cubic form of boron nitride, is enhancing the grinding process when grinding ferrous materials . CBN also has a higher superior thermal stability and chemical makeup than that of diamond, making it the ideal wheel for grinding ferrous metals.

The thermal stability of CBN is another significant advantage that is held over diamond. Since diamond is pure carbon that is formed under pressure, it is not ideal for grinding steel. The high thermal temperatures that are caused while grinding, cause the steel to take in the carbon atoms from the diamond wheel and result in eroding the diamond grit. CBN isn’t made up of carbon, just boron and nitride, making it the ideal superabrasive for grinding steel, stellite and nickel-based alloys. Our wheels can be utilized in all three areas of centerless grinding:

What is through-feed grinding

Through-feed: In through-feed grinding, the workpiece enters one side and exits the opposite side. The regulating wheel in through-feed grinding is moved away from the plane of the grinding wheel in such a way that puts a lateral force component, feeding the workpiece through between the two wheels. Through-feed grinding can be an efficient centerless grinding technique, because it does not require a separate feed mechanism; however, it can only be used with cylindrical workpieces.

What is end-feed grinding

Another technique that can be used with centerless grinding wheels is end-feed grinding. In end-feed, the workpiece is fed in on one side and comes to rest against an end stop. At this point, the grinding operation is performed, and then the workpiece continues in the same direction to exit the machine. Tapered workpieces are the best for end-feed grinding.

What is in-feed grinding

The third technique that can be utilized, is in-feed centerless grinding. In-feed grinding works well with complex shapes. Before the grinding process can begin, the workpiece is manually loaded into the machine and the regulating wheel is moved into place.
