HVOF Grinding

HVOF is a type of thermal spray that utilizes combustion of gases to apply coatings for the strengthening of materials. HVOF uses gases such as hydrogen or liquid fuel such as kerosene. Fuel and oxygen mix, thus combusting and creating a high velocity which is used to propel particles at supersonic speeds. One of the great benefits of spraying at high combustion pressure is high particle velocity and resulting in high coating quality. This high quality coating creates a hard coating that is praised in many industries such as the automotive and aerospace industry. HVOF coated materials can be complex due to the excellent bond strength and thickness of the coating. HVOF coatings can be as thick as half an inch, resulting in a difficult to grind (DTG) material that needs an even harder material to ground it. Commercial abrasives, no longer becomes enough to grind these materials coated with HVOF. Instead specially engineered HVOF Grinding Wheels are needed to work with this material.

Diamond Grinding Wheel

The hardness of HVOF coatings requires that they be ground with a diamond wheel. As a result, the grinding machine that houses the grinding wheel requires a higher static and greater stiffness. Diamonds are the highest material known to man and by applying diamond to hvof grinding wheels, diamond wheels can grind substantially higher levels of the coating compared to conventional wheels. It maintains its size and has an exceptionally longer life.

The key to grinding HVOF coatings is following correct procedures for diamond wheels, including but not limited to the proper selection of the HVOF grinding wheel, grit size, grade and bond type, proper mounting and balancing for the truing and dressing of the wheel prior to grinding.
