CBN or Cubic Boron Nitride is a man-made material that is composed of a crystal structure similar to that of diamond. Diamond has always been in the spotlight of the turning industry due to its ability for cool and clean cuts with an extremely high removal rate. However, in the past 10 years, CBN has quickly gained popularity in the industry. CBN wheels are great for high speed grinding due to their high thermal rate. CBN Wheels and Ferrous Materials
As mentioned above CBN is great for working with ferrous materials. If you have worked with diamond wheels in the past, you know that diamond wheels do not perform well against materials that are ferrous. CBN is able to grind ferrous materials due to the swapping of carbon for boron atoms. In the diamond structure, carbon atoms are used for the bonds. In the CBN crystal structure, the element boron replaces carbon atoms. It is important to note, when trying to grind ferrous materials, such as iron, Diamond is not a great abrasive to use. When working with ferrous materials, the carbon atoms react, causing a rapid breakdown of their internal structure. CBN is able to grind ferrous materials due to the boron atoms not reacting with the elements in ferrous materials.
