Hardfacing is a way to build up surfaces by adding welded metals through joining or welding. This process may lengthen the life of surfaced parts and can even return used parts to practically new condition with 25-75% less cost. There are several different procedures that can be used with hardfacing, and in order of popularity these are them; flux cored arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), oxyfuel welding (OFW), and plasma transferred arc welding, laser welding, thermal spray and brazing. Carbon and low alloy steels are the most commonly used for this technique, however determining the type of wear your equipment may encounter will help you determine what filler metal to use. If your equipment is subject to repeated impact, then hardfacing may be a better option in terms of cost and time saving. The economics of hardfacing may be influenced by the deposition rate of each process. The deposition rate for each procedure of hardfacing is as follows; FCAW (8-25 lbs/hr), GMAW (5-12 lbs/hr), SMAW (3-5 lbs/hr), SAW (8-25 lbs/hr), GTAW (3-5 lbs/hr), and OFW (5-10 lbs/hr).
