Hardfacing, also known as hard surfacing, is the application or buildup of wear-resistant weld metals to a part’s surface to strengthen the makeup of the piece it is applied to. The reason behind this practice is to help prevent metal parts from failing due to wear, which causes the parts to lose dimension and functionality.
Hardfacing may be applied to a new part during production to increase its wear resistance, or it may be used to restore a worn down surface. By applying hardfacing to the surface, part life is drastically improved, resulting in significant savings by decreasing machine down time and general production costs.
Steel, cement, mining, and the oil and gas industries are just a few of many that have utilized hardfacing to their benefit.
In these industries, the parts simply do not last long enough without hardfacing, with the causes below usually being the culprit:
- Abrasion – 40%
- Impact – 25%
- Metallic – 5%
- Heat – 5%
- Corrosion – 5%
Hardfacing can be applied using thermal spraying, spray-fuse and welding processes. Once the layer is applied, it takes a heavy-duty superabrasive to grind down the surface for maintenance.
Eagle’s diamond wheel lineup is perfect for tackling the complex challenge of working on hardface materials. We have the perfect bond for your application, and can consistently repeat it time and time again.
